Kidswirl is promoted as ‘Facebook for kids’. It aims to provide a safe social networking environment for kids keen to commence using online social features. Dozen.com  took a look at their site to see if they lived up to the hype.

What can be learned here? This grades the educational value of the site for children..
This site trains kids in social networking. However there is an argument that all this filtering and cosseting actually restricts them learning how to manage themselves online and develop an awareness of internet safety. I guess it depends on the kid and your parenting style whether you wish to use a ‘training ground’ such as this (which does not entirely mirror reality) or unleash them in the real world with plenty of support (and a fudged birth date to gain the access!).

Why is this site different to other kids social networks or club sites? This grades the originality of the site..
The site looks more like Facebook than Facebook. This is intentional so that kids online feel like they are using the real thing. The concept of a tweens social network is not original but I guess having one that mirrors their older siblings’ and parent’s network is clever, as they don’t feel babied and my not notice that they are using a filtered site.

How good are the site graphics? This grades the quality of the CGI graphics and animation featured on the site..
As with Facebooks, graphics are rather drab and boring.No avatars or anything attractive in this site.

Kidswirl gives tweens the ability to be part of the modern phenomenon that social networking has become. They can communicate with friends and family all over the world, swap videos and photos and generally hang out online.
