Social networking is all the rage but some sites (think Facebook/Myspace) are just too adult for kids, but at the same time many have outgrown the likes of Webkinz and Club Penguin. Since tweens are the new teens, a massive gap has appeared in the market. Well, in this day and age, gaps don’t appear for long and positioning themselves to fill the void are FaceChipz.

FaceChipz is a brand new social networking site for the tween generation. This spanking new site prides itself on being a safe introduction to kids social networks. Dozenkids.com was keen to find out more.
Safety:
Facechipz Fun
Buy the Chips and Build Your Network

This site takes extensive steps to keep users safe and in doing so has earned the ESRB Privacy Online seal, as well as the Socially Safe Seal.

Parental consent is sought before kids can use the site and the platform manages to not only allow kids to develop the confidence and common sense to use free typing on the net but does so whilst addressing the safety concerns of parents.

FaceChipz has all the features of a real social network with the major difference that kids online communicate with their known, physical friends. There are no online unknowns here and no unsolicited contact.

To re-inforce the safety aspect of using more ‘grown up’ areas of the net, FaceChipz has lots of safety advice for kids and parents, including a helpful sample of an

online safety parent/child agreement. Dozen.com certainly came away feeling that the site had security as a premium consideration in all that it does and the whole design of the network has safety running through it.  Great job.
Support:
Just an FAQ and email address.
Traffic:
The site only launched on 1 November 2009, so no traffic data available yet.
Educational Value:
The site teaches networking skills. Kids can create their own profile page, type up their social networking profile, upload photos, use avatars and connect with friends. Whilst these are great skills and are educational they are in a very specific area.
Originality:
This is a lovely idea to introduce kids to social networking in a known, trusted, safe environment.
Graphics:
The profile pages are well designed and colorful. The home page consists of floating chips that you can click on to find out more information.
Fun Factor:

The central thread of FaceChipz is the exchange of friendship tokens in order to create an online community. Token packs need to be purchased ($8 for five, $22 for 15) and are then used (via encoded numbers that need to be input) to build a contact list. A pack of five FaceChipz retails at ToysRUs for only $4.99 - a small price to keep your kids safe online.

Kids could easily have a hundred contacts (family, friends from current and previous schools etc.) and as a token can only be used once. In addition, the site encourages the collection and trading of tokens (they can be used to earn points).

The more connections kids make, the more points they earn. Points can be exchanged for special online FaceChipz. There are loads of FaceChipz to collect, all with different emoticons, and colors. These are designed to convey a range of emotions, so if a friend is feeling down you can send them a crying FaceChipz and so on.

The concept is great and it is a lot of fun, as well a great introduction to the adult networking scene.

Creativity:
Kids will enjoy their first foray into the world of social networking and will have fun filling out their profile page, deciding upon an avatar, uploading photos and sending public or private messages. This colorful site teaches great web and social skills in an enjoyable and more importantly, safe manner.
