Neopets is a kids social networking site that offers chat and messaging. Players under 13 need parental consent to access communication features. There is also an abuse reporting system in place so that any untoward posters can be warned or barred.

This kids social network has a safety page which includes a warning about sites which, ‘could cost your family money’. This is a little ironic. Although Neopets has lots of pet items which can be purchased using free Neopoints, there are also, temptingly, additional items which can only be bought with Neocash (which parents will have to fork out for). This site also caused contention with its use of ‘immersed’ adverts within the game and the use of challenges that involved marketing surveys. A few mixed messages here!

There is an extremely comprehensive and detailed FAQ section which covers a mind boggling array of possible queries. These are all clearly categorized. There is also email contact for queries not resolved here. Live-time message support would have been more fitting for this media but they have made efforts to support their customers.

The vast variety of games and enjoyable, virtual world give Neopets its own special place in the kids social networking scene. Although there are other games with similar themes, the creative design of Neopets, coupled with its continuous growth and development, has resulted in the achievement of a solid global membership.

There are 18 different lands inhabited by Neopets and the kids website includes hundreds of games, each with ‘Neopoints’ scoring opportunities. These points can be used to buy things.

The games on offer range from simple puzzles to action and adventure games. There is a featured game every day, as well as a ‘most popular’ section and a helpful, searchable database.

Players can interact with their pet or chat to other players. There is so much choice at Neopets that kids will easily become engrossed in this virtual world of pets, players and purchasing.
