Brainpop.com are celebrating their tenth anniversary this year and boast 6 million visitors to their websites each month. With figures like that, DozenKids.com had their curiosity aroused and went to find out more about this kids online education site..

Social Studies
Social Studies at brainpop.com

Animated curriculum based content that engages students across hundreds of topics. Brain Pop covers grades 3-12 and has a sister site, Brain Pop Jr for K–3.

The site is video driven and resources are all listed under topical categories such as Science, English, Math, Health and Technology.  Individual subjects can be looked up under each category heading or via the search tool.

The videos all cover specific topics and alongside each video there is a range of educational games and resources.  These are in the form of multiple choice quizzes, timelines of related events, experiments and activities.  There are also teaching resources and an icon where kids can submit questions on the topic.

The e-learning videos are colorful and informative. The learning resources are curriculum mapped and, if the references left on the website are anything to go by, have a big thumbs up from teachers.

If it all sounds too good to be true… here comes the catch.  The Brain Pop site is for subscribers. This comes at a reasonable $99 a year for the site.  The price may not be too restrictive but with so many learning resources available over the net for free, you would have to be totally convinced that this site was worth the monthly fee.

For those with empty pockets the site does offer some free materials across each category of topic.

Why is this site different to other E-learning sites? This grades the originality of the site and how it encourages children's creativity..
The simplicity of the ‘videos and activities’ approach plus the range of high quality educational tasks demonstrates the thought and creativity that have been put into this program.

How good are the site graphics? This grades the quality of the CGI graphics and animation of the games feature on the site..
Although the cartoon like graphics are not on par with some sites, they are colorful and don’t distract from the main business of the day; kids education.

OK, how fun is this site? Are there games on offer? Does it engage children's imagination? Run stupid competitions? We gave extra points for fun and activities..

The Tim and Moby characters are fun and using the same characters within different educational movies provides consistency in terms of teaching style as well as builds up rapport and familiarity amongst viewers.

The learning is presented in a fun way and the activities are all interesting.  The fun is certainly a major factor here but it does come secondary to the learning objectives, as it should do.
