Disney is more than just a company; it’s a legend with the magic touch. Over its 85+ year history it has constantly evolved to move with the times; embracing new media and developing its repertoire of products and services. Dozen.com decided to scamper through their website to see how they tackled their cyber entity of online kids TV.

Hannah Montana
The Hannah Montana Page at Disney.com

The Disney site is sleek and sumptuous. It is split into three channels; Disney, Disney XD and Playhouse.

Each targets a different age group and viewers can see videos of their favorite kids TV shows, play games and find lots of information on their favorite shows and characters.

Playhouse has some nice reading and coloring activities. Disney.com allows you to click on cast photos, get the lowdown on each cast member and find out details of individual episodes. There are also quizzes and games based upon Disney shows and TV listings.

Disney.go.com is glossy and colorful but it took us a while to determine what was on the site and how to find it.  There is just too much distraction here.  Also, disappointingly, some of the pages took a while to load.

What can be learned here? This grades the educational value of the site for children..

The Disney site includes lesson plans for teachers so that Disney kids television programs can be used in a classroom setting to introduce themes, discussions and activities of educational value. The lesson plans are very useful and are linked to the schools curriculum.

Some of the games on the site, particularly those for the younger age group, have educational value too.

However, there is room for further educational activity to complement the movies, shows and games.

Lots of options here to aid navigation; an open search facility that brings up categorized sections from across the site with contents lists beneath each heading there’s also a menu bar of individual categories to click on from the top of the home page. The site is logically ordered and easy to navigate.

Why is it different to other kids TV sites? We graded originality and innovation..

This site offers what you would imagine; promotion of TV, Movies, Games, live events, theme parks and stores. It brings everything together in one place.  Not original but certainly functional.

The site, although offering great resources to viewers, is incredibly commercial, with constantly rolling trailers and site advertizing – all a bit overkill.

Can you trust this site? This grades the site's suitability for children. Does it give parental advice? Does it link to unsuitable sites? Does it lead to download viruses?.
Disney has an internet safety page offering advice to parents. There is also the feature of setting up parental authorities for kids, so that chat safety levels can be set. Chat can be from pre-selected phrases or freer chat is also possible, as long as all the words are within the Disney dictionary. Disney has certainly taken sensible steps to ensure child safety
