PBS kids is a children’s TV site that contains many familiar kids TV faces. We checked out their site to see if it had the Midas touch.

Music Activities and Songs on PSB Kids

The home page contains a snazzy spinning wheel with pictures of the characters from all the PBS shows. You can spin the wheel around and click on the characters to go to their pages.  The site has features on video, games, music and coloring.

The games are age appropriate and the graphics are clear, large and classy.

If we have one criticism it’s that there could have been more content but what there was, was well done.

What can be learned here? This grades the educational value of the site for children..

The activities on PBS Kids are all based around the development needs of the target age group.

In addition, the PBS Kids online TV site has a sister site called PBS Kids Play which is linked to on this site.  There you can play interactive games to help kids prepare for school. The main site also links in to PBS Dragonsfly TV, which is a multi media science education program.

How interactive is this site? Is there a Facebook Group? Twitter? RSS feeds? Linked In? We found out..
There are no social options on the main site but when we clicked on a game we were taken to the PBSdragsonsfly site which did have message boards, albeit for older kids. These were very well categorized and on educational themes.

How good is the picture quality on this site? Is the video picture blurred or clear? Do they offer HD? .

The main menu is split into ‘coloring’, ‘games’, ‘videos’ and ‘music’ – each category has accompanying audio to help young, non readers navigate the site. In addition you can click on TV characters to reach relevant information.

There is also a search box for individual programs or topics to be typed in. Finally there is an ‘all shows’ prompt that gives you an alphabetical list of kids tv shows, each accompanied by a colorful screenshot.

Lots of navigational options, all delivered with style and simplicity.

Ok, how fun is this site? Are there games on offer? Does it do stupid things to photos? Run stupid competitions? We gave extra points for craziness..
The activities on this children’s television site are fun and educational. Theming them around TV characters worked well and will certainly help to engage young viewers.  The graphics are high quality and appealing.

Why is it different to other kids TV sites? We graded originality and innovation..

This site has a nice range of material on it. They were all themed to TV shows, so the coloring, for example, was of much-loved characters from favorite shows. The games, as well as being educational in terms of topics and activities (mouse control etc.), also involve TV characters.

You can click on a line of photos of TV characters within each section to get themed materials. A novel approach and one that will crank up the fun factor.

Can you trust this site? This grades the site's suitability for children. Does it give parental advice? Does it link to unsuitable sites? Does it lead to download viruses?.
All links to third party sites throw up a screen warning kids they are leaving the PBS site plus a message advising kids about general internet safety. The site content and adverts are all wholesome. PBS makes every effort to provide a safe surfing site.
